Kingston, Norbiton, and Surbiton were suburban areas located to the southwest of central London in 1888. The area was primarily residential with a mix of middle and upper-class residents. Kingston was historically significant as it was a royal borough and the site of a market that had been in operation since Anglo-Saxon times. Surbiton was known for its Victorian villas and a large railway station, while Norbiton was a village-like area with several grand homes and the site of the Royal Military Academy.

Other notable landmarks included the ancient All Saints Church in Kingston, which dates back to the 9th century, and the Coronation Stone, which was used in the coronation of several Saxon kings. Surbiton had a popular pleasure ground, known as Surbiton Park, which had a lake and was a popular spot for boating and picnics. Kingston was also home to the Hogsmill River, which was depicted in several of William Turner's paintings.

The area was well-connected to central London by the railway, and many people chose to live in Kingston, Norbiton, and Surbiton for the tranquility and fresh air it provided. The residents were primarily professionals, businessmen, and the upper class, and the area was known for its elegant homes, grand villas, and luxurious living.
