In 1888, Hammersmith was a bustling suburb of London located on the northern bank of the Thames River. It was known for its large residential areas, including Castlenau and North End, which were home to affluent families, while King Street was a popular shopping destination. The area was served by several railway stations, including Shaftsbury Road Station, Hammersmith Station, and West Kensington Station.

One of the notable landmarks in Hammersmith was the Hammersmith Bridge, which had been built in the mid-19th century to connect the area to Barnes on the other side of the river. The Convent of the Good Shepherd was another landmark, established in the mid-19th century by nuns who provided care for destitute and homeless women.

Kirkman's Piano-Forte Manufactory, founded in the early 19th century, was also located in Hammersmith and was one of the leading piano manufacturers in England at the time. The National Agricultural Hall, located in West Kensington, hosted major agricultural shows and exhibitions.

St. Pauls Schools was another prominent institution, providing education to boys in the area. Hammersmith Cemetery and Fulham Cemetery were both established in the mid-19th century to provide burial space for the growing population of the area.
