In 1888, Hampstead was a predominantly wealthy area in London, known for its beautiful views and natural scenery. The residents were mostly affluent, consisting of the upper class, aristocrats, and artists. Kilburn, located south of Hampstead, was a more middle-class area, with a mix of residential and commercial properties. St John's Wood was another affluent area, with grand Victorian and Georgian mansions.

West End Station, located in St John's Wood, was a popular railway station for commuters, connecting the area to the rest of London. Finchley Road Station and Loudoun Road Station also served the area. West Middlesex Water Works was a significant landmark, supplying clean water to the growing population of London.

Kilburn Vale was a residential area with terraced houses, while Kilburn Station was a major transport hub, connecting the area to central London. Swiss Cottage Station and Marlborough Road Station also served the area, providing access to other parts of the city.

Avenue Road, Abney Road, and Edgware Road were bustling commercial streets, with shops, pubs, and restaurants catering to the local residents. The area was also home to the beautiful Paddington Cemetery, a Victorian cemetery with ornate tombs and sculptures.
